Yoga der Stille retreat, Oberstaufen - first retreat 2010 with Madhukar in Europe

Welcome everybody to Yoga der Stille retreat in Oberstaufen,
April 1 - 6,2010!

The hotel evviva! with its special atmosphere is a perfect place
to experience the first retreat 2010 with Madhukar in Europe.

At an altitude of 791 metres, Oberstaufen is situated in the county
of Oberallgaeu, close to Vorarlberg, Austria.
Oberstaufen has won several awards
for being the sportiest community of Bavaria.
Playing golf and tennis, hiking, and sledding on the summer toboggan run is a lot of fun, alone or in the group.
The gorgeous landscape invites us to meditative hiking tours.
Therefore it is imperative to bring along good walking shoes.

In the restaurant ecco! we are regaled with delicious vegetarian food. The aromatic scent of rosemary, parmesan and polenta
tells of mediterranean cooking.
But also specialities of the Allgaeu belong to the lovingly refined cuisine. For each guest the wellness area with whirlpool, sauna,
steam bath and fitness room are included in the price.
For the retreat please bring a floor cushion.

The retreat starts on Maundy Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 6 pm
with dinner. Satsang will be after dinner. Check in begins at 4 pm.
The retreat ends April 6, 2010 after having lunch together
at approx. 2 pm. Retreat language is German, when required also English.

Dear Madhukarji!

Already since the first day of the Awakening retreat I have felt your support. Now and then you give me glances of encouragement and I feel a true friendliness when you look at me. It is as you wish to say: Come on Anders, what are you waiting for, it is so simple, it is so easy.

A thought, that maybe I was destinated to die here occurred several times, even before leaving Sweden for India. There seemed to be no fear maybe because of my strong determination to come to Arunachala and stay here in silence.

Now I am feeling better and better every day and more and more silent. When I found myself lost in thoughts or emotions, I focus on ‘who am I?’

Dear Guruji, thank you for giving me this opportunity to be here in silence under your guiding light.

Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela (Kumbh = jug) and Mela (festival) is the greatest religious celebration of Hinduism and the greatest spiritual feast of the world. Every 12 years it takes place in four different cities in India, Allahabad, Hardwar, Ujjain and Nashik – each town having its own cycle of 12 years after which a Maha (great) Kumbh Mela is taking place. The purpose of the Mela is the “ritual bath” at a special time and special place.
For many Hindu orders the Kumbh Mela is the place of initiation and admission of disciples into the community. Celebrating Kumbh Mela (The Feast of the Jug) has its origin in the Hindu myth of creation of the “Churning of the Ocean of Milk”.

The Churning of the Ocean of Milk

In the great Hindu epics the creation myth of

“The churning of the Ocean of Milk” is told.
The subject of this creation myth is the search for Amrit, the nectar of immortality (mrit = death, A-mrit = Not death) gods and demons were longing for, which is hidden in the ocean of milk unreachable for all of them. Only their churning together of the primeval water, which is said to have lasted one thousand god-years, finally brought the desired elixir to the surface.
Also this myth is the cause for the development of the “greatest bath festival of the world”, Kumbha Mela: While the gods and demons quarreled about the jug (kumbha) filled with Amrita, they spilled four of the precious drops. The places where they fell down on earth became sacred and healing towns where the festivals are celebrated until today at special times.

Gods and Demons quarrelled with each other constantly and as many of them died in the fights, they asked Vishnu for help. Vishnu proposed to the gods to ally with the demons to get Amrita, the nectar of immortality, from the Ocean of Milk. So they wound the serpent Vasuki around Mount Meru as a rope and turned it into a whisk. The gods pulled at the tail, the demons pulled at the head. For a long time there was no success and the mountain even was about to sink into the ocean. Than Vishnu manifested himself as a giant turtle (Kurma) and crawled under the mountain. On his back he slowly lifted it up out of the waters and supported it.

With the whisk of mountain and serpent the allies went on churning the water until it became as white as milk. Suddenly a horrible poison rising from the water threatened to destroy everything. Shiva hurried to help and drank the poison Hala-hala to the last drop. Since then his neck is “nil”, that means blue, and therefore he is called “Nilakanta” (the one with the blue neck).

The churning could go on and one after another different divine treasures and precious objects surfaced from the milk white ocean. Lakshmi too, the goddess of happiness and wealth, radiant and beautiful, emerged from the milk ocean on a lotus flower and was reunited with Vishnu.

Finally the shape of a dark young man emerged from the waters, ornated with jewels and a garland of flowers round his neck. It was Dhanvantari, the god of healing and source of every healing art. In his hand he held for what all longed for – a big jug filled with Amrita, the nectar of immortality.
Gods and demons who had cooperated until now, now started to fight again (which is said to have lasted for 12 days). Greedily the demons wanted to snatch the precious beverage. In this moment Vishnu appeared in the shape of a very attractive young woman, Mohini. Gently smiling the beauty offered to distribute Amrita to all of them. Using a trick, she gave the elixir only to the gods. The demons, distracted by their infatuation, didn’t get any of it.
But one of the demons, Rahu, was suspicious bad mingled with the gods to receive a drop too. Sun and moon gave him away and as quick as a flash of lightning Vishnu/Mohini cut off his head with a disc before the Amrita (he had just swallowed) could reach his body. Therefore only his head became immortal. The lifeless body fell down to earth.
Since then Rahu is seeking revenge trying to swallow sun and moon again and again. This is seen on earth as eclipse of the sun or eclipse of the moon.

Demons and gods quarrelled about the property of the jug until finally Garuda, the mount of Vishnu, flew away with the divine elixir. Doing this, four drops of the precious content fell on the four cities where the festival is celebrated. For twelve days the gods and demons fought about the property of Amrita. For twelve days the gods staid on Mutilock (earth). 12 days of the gods are 12 years for man, this is the reason for the 12 years rhythm.
Another version says that a bird (a crow) snatched the nectar from the demons and flew away with it, taking rest at the four places.

Я, Зимина Татьяна, посылаю Вам сердечное Спасибо из Сибирского города Омска за Ваше незримое, но очень мощное присутствие на всех сатсангах, которые проводил Николай один раз в неделю с августа 2009 года в нашем медицинском Центре Новой Медицины «Армос». За шесть месяцев занятий йогой тишины произошло значительное расширение моего сознания, появилась осознанность каждого момента своей жизни и вопрошание «Кто Я», «Кто это делает, ощущает» сопровождает меня постоянно. Благодарю за абсолютную Любовь, гармонию, мир и покой, которые Вы посылаете нашей группе. В ходе сатсанга все пространство наполняется благодарностью, радостью и каждая клеточка организма поет, а сердце наполняется и открывается Божественной любовью. И это удивительное состояние, которое невозможно описать словами, сохраняется все дольше, с радостью передаешь его своей семье, своим пациентам, всем окружающим тебя людям. А все кармические неприятности встречаешь осознанно, сохраняя спокойствие не только внешнее, но и внутреннее.. Правда, еще случаются и неудачные дни, за которые потом стыдно, когда испытываешь негармоничные состояния сознания, но это бывает все реже и реже, все меньше остается иллюзорных желаний и пустых потребностей.

Но одно сильное желание сохраняется – обрести истинного Гуру, который бы показал мне Абсолютную истину и помог мне осознать: Я есть То, обрести Абсолютную Свободу здесь и сейчас.

Thank you for the days in Goa, which I was allowed to spend with you. You radically have shown to me how much EGO is still existing inside of me, and which conditionings keep me imprisoned.

Heart-warming Letter of Love from Siberia

I thank you for the divine possibility to address to you in this letter.
I, Zimina Tatiana, send to you hearty thanks from the Siberian city Omsk
for your invisible but very powerful presence in all meetings that Nikolay
carried out once a week since August 2009 in our medical center ARMOS.

During 6 months of practicing Yoga of Silence my conciousness expanded significally, I have now awareness of every moment of my life, and inquiery
“Who am I?”, “Who is doing, feeling?” is constantly with me.
I thank you for the Absolute Love, Harmony, Peace and Silence
that you are sending to our group.

In the meetings all the space is filled with Grace, Joy, and every cell of the body is singing and the heart is open and full of Divine Love. And this wonderful state that I cannot describe lasts longer and longer. With joy I give it over to my family and my patients, to all the people surrounding me. And all karmic difficulties I meet in Awareness, in external and internal peace. Of course, I still have unlucky days also for which I feel later ashamed. I feel sometimes inharmonic states but this happens more and more seldom, less illusory desires and empty needs are remaining.

But one strong desire is alive – the desire to find the True Guru who will show me Absolute Truth and help me to see: “I am That”, to find Absolute Freedom here and now.

To let you all take part in the graceful Satsangs here in our ocean breezed pavilion,
we transcribed for you this beautiful dialog from 19.01.2010:

"Sinking into the Self"

Guest: First, I like to thank you for giving us all this love.
Once you gave me this advice: I should inquire who I am.
And when I go into silence, I use this question all the time to stop my thoughts. And then sometimes, pictures are coming after a while from my mind. My question now: Is the mind creating such pictures, such illusions? Or where are these pictures coming from?

Madhukar: Certainly from the mind; certainly without mind there are no pictures, there is no manifestation, without mind there is no universe. Universe is mind.

G: One or two times as there was nothing, I became afraid. There was absolutely nothing, like black light.

M: Who gets afraid when there is nothing? You say there is nothing, who gets afraid then? If there is nothing nobody would be afraid. And, has the nothingness ever been afraid? No, the nothingness never. Who is afraid?

G: It is me.

M: It is the mind. If it is you, you have to find out who?
It is offered to you. Something is offered to you: manifestation. Something is offered to you: you call it black. Something is offered to you: fear. But who are you? Who are you ordering the plate, taking the plate, eating the plate, refusing the plate? Who are you?

G: This I do not know!

M: It is courageous to admit ‘I do not know’. Most man at your age, your position, your lifestyle, do not admit ‘I do not know, who I am’.

G: How can I find out, who I am?

M: By being here, at the source of everything. By sinking into the source, sinking with ‘s’, not with ‘th’. You pronounce it the same. Sinking, thinking. Everybody thinks. Nobody sinks, Sinking in the Self.

G: I will try this.

M: Do not even try, also at the source of trying there must be something.

G. So I will do it.

M: Like Socrates, you have arrived at this understanding ‘I do not know’, I do not know who I am’. And he did a lot of thinking before. Then he realised: I do not know who I am. But he was not afraid, not even afraid to die. He wanted to prove, his people, that he is not afraid. He knew: I am not the body. The body, which we all enjoy so much. And also the body which is suffering.

G: It is like we hold on to the small things we have.

M: What do you have? Nothing.
I hold this handkerchief; it is useful for the sweat, the tears and to fan away the flies. But actually, do I own it? No, it is cotton, some atoms, it is earth, and it will dissolve again to the very same, atoms. Even smaller parts, it is actually nothingness, useful nothingness.

G: But I am...

M: Before you said: ‘I do not know’ who I am. But now you say: ‘But I am’. You see? Immediately you cheat yourself, believing you know. The mind cheats yourself… mind always pretends to have knowledge. The moment, the instant you inquire, no knowledge is there, and even all the mindstuff is of no use, only illusion, enjoyable illusion. For some it is suffering, for some it is joy.

G. Yes, when I am here, in this moment now, I really do not know nothing. Ok, the mind sometimes makes me... I do not know...
I really have to be just here, then it is really easy.

M: What is this result of your practice?
That you are here! Why you use practice, if you are here anyway?

G: I am not always here.

M: Where do you go?

G: Sometimes I go into the past, sometimes in the future.

M: Great, others try to invent time machines, to go backwards in time and to travel into the future. You do not need a time machine. You are mastering that…
(silence)
Anyway, in your case, you have a double name, isn’t it? Two names, no? Hans-???

G: Jürgen.

M: Hans-Jürgen.

G: Yes.

M: Let Hans live in the past and Jürgen in the future. And that who you are, let it be here. Now.. That is happiness.

G: So I need a new name.

M: No, why a new name? Who is this: ‘Now I need’ ? Who is that, who says ‘I need’ ?
‘I’, you told me before, does not know anything. So what this ‘I’ says is nonsense. Now ‘I’ presumes again ‘I need’...
That was the first when you arrived in the now?

G: This was not I.

M: So now in this instant, before the ‘I’ arises, what is here?
(silence)

Being here with you and all the beautiful people is a blessing.
This is as grace already entered my life and I can feel safe, that grace
will guardian my life.
Words cannot convey what I meet here in Satsang.
We use words as peace, happiness etc, but I feel what is taking place, what reveals is a mystery.
When I see you turn into a godlike, smiling golden, ancient appearance
it is impossible to judge what is taking place.
It is as if I have always been there with you in that silent dimension. Sometimes I have a tendency to forget what you can ´t tell me
but I believe that I somehow get it anyway.
The other day when I was invited to you,
it was as a magical mystery tour and only watched you working
was beautiful, master does the work.
Yesterday evening in Satsang something told me that you cannot be
defined in words, because there are no limitations, no borders.

Master answers the question: What is Grace?

Fragender: Es gibt eine Frage, die mich stark beschäftigt:
Was ist denn Gnade?

Madhukar: He asks, he says he is very busy with the question; asking: What is Grace?
Grace is when you are not busy with anything and you are very satisfied.
And you are home wherever you are,
when you are aware of this wonder.
Grace is sitting here in satsang. That is Grace.
Waking up from illusion. That is Grace.
Drowning in the ocean. That is Grace.
Being in love with Sophia- wisdom- that is Grace.
Eating lousy pasta and not getting very angry, that is Grace, also.
Do you understand now better? Yes, better. Better, because Grace itself is formless and we cannot define it.
We cannot define. So, is Grace also kissing you?

F: Ja. Nicht immer. (Yes. Not always).

M: That is your interpretation, which is not true. Grace is always here. Always embracing you. Only you turn away sometimes.
You dream not living in Grace.

"Awakening" - Retreat with Madhukar in Tiruvannamalai, India

Awakening in the Source

Highlight of the year:

A three weeks intensive silence retreat at the foot of Arunachala! The world famous Saint Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi lived here, and visiting his still existing Ashram is an aspect of the retreat.

The attention is focused on the truth inside of you. Experience and enjoy the presence of a living master in daily Satsang in the pavilion of the blooming Suddhananda Ashram.

At the beginning each participant of the three
weeks retreat takes a strict vow of silence.

Only during Satsang questions and doubts can be clarified.
According to the Ashram rules consumption of alcohol and drugs
are strictly forbidden.
Everybody also agrees not to smoke during the retreat.
We will introduce into the blessing tradition of the Pradakshina:
meditatively go on a pilgrimage around the mountain,
during the daytime and again at night in the moonlight.
Promise: At least once we will visit Sri Ramana Maharshi’s living room.

Dress code for the retreat clothes is exclusively
white and orange. Retreat languages: English and German.

November 4th, 2009 we are celebrating Madhukarji's birthday during the retreat Meisterspiel. Due to many requests, this time - as an exception - it is possible for devotees to join the retreat for this day.
The price for participating this day is 60 € and includes 2 Satsangs. The price for vegetarian full board (22 €/29 € per day - withouth/with breakfast) and the price for overnight stay if needed has to be paid directly to the hotel. It is also still possible to participate the entire retreat. Young devotees can apply for the scholarship.

HAPPY DIWALI 2009 - The ‘Festival of Lights’ starts 17th October

Deepawali or Diwali is certainly the biggest of all Hindu festivals. It's the festival of lights (deep = light and avali = a row i.e., a row of lights) that's marked by four days of celebration, which literally illumines the country with its brilliance and dazzles all with its joy. Each of the four days in the festival of Diwali is separated by a different tradition, but what remains true and constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness.

The Origin of Diwali
Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali. Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed God, the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshipped in most Hindu homes on this day. In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers.

These Four Days
Each day of Diwali has it's own tale, legend and myth to tell. The first day of the festival Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. Amavasya, the second day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the tyrant Bali, and banished him to hell. Bali was allowed to return to earth once a year, to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance, and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. It is on the third day of Deepawali — Kartika Shudda Padyami that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj) and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

The Significance of Lights & Firecrackers
All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance and a story to tell. The illumination of homes with lights and the skies with firecrackers is an expression of obeisance to the heavens for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity. According to one belief, the sound of fire-crackers are an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. Still another possible reason has a more scientific basis: the fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects and mosquitoes, found in plenty after the rains.

The Tradition of Gambling
The tradition of gambling on Deepawali also has a legend behind it. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva, and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year.

From Darkness Unto Light...
In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light — the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity.

During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Outside India, Diwali is more than a Hindu festival, it's a celebration of South-Asian identities.

If you are away from the sights and sounds of Diwali, light a diya, sit quietly, shut your eyes, withdraw the senses, concentrate on this supreme light and illuminate the soul.

DIVINE PARADISE RETREAT WITH MADHUKARJI 2009

Satsang in Divine Paradise. Never experienced such a magnificent nature as on the Andamans. Magnificence everywhere and every moment. Magnificence in the jungle blossoms blooming all over, in the myriads of green, in the jungle sounds, the bird songs, magnificence all around and through me. The air so soft and gentle that each breath is caress. Smooth and tenderly embracing the skin. On the Andamans the air and the sea is one ocean of love. I spent hours swimming in the ocean there, did not want to get out anymore. Such a warm tender light ocean water!! Lovely, soft and sweet. Lovingly! And what a view looking back towards the beach!! Seeing this wild and free virgin forest. Never thought that jungle could be that clear.

The way from the cottages to the beach only takes a couple of minutes and reveals the most fantastic nature one can imagine. Walking there in the early morning to take a swim in the first daylight, the way leads through these humongous trees, more than 600 years old, standing there huge and silently in the morning light. Gigantic, in their very own absolute beauty. Breathtaking. Shining when the sun breaks through. And each time when I was looking at them they seemed so unbelievable to me. Each time there was only pure astonishment that something like this exists. What a miracle! What a wonder! And very still, in the very morning, the elephants came, moving silently and gently trough this magic majestic forest.

The white sandy beach is wide, long and empty. It offers lots of hidden places, laying in the shade under these mighty trees. Further up, not far to walk, there is a laguna with water of the most beautiful tourquoise there is. It shines. I swam through it, reaching the other side, walking further along the beach which is getting smaller and smaller there, climbing over seawashed tree trunks, and finally found the place where the jungle falls into the ocean.

All along the beach there are places full of little hermit crabs in a diversity that is beyond all discription. So delightful to watch how bravely they carry their little houses on their back, being all busy moving towards places only they might know. Hindrances do not exist for them. And not one looks like the other. So colorful! So alive! So amazing.

And there are other places full of seashells, shining whitely on the white sand and glowing in the sun light, covering oceanwashed rocks and secret niches.

The biggest miracle in the Divine Paradise Retreat was looking at my own face in the mirror. Seeing my eyes shining soft and gentle as I have never seen them before. Seeing the sweetness and lovliness of Divine Paradise looking out of them. What a blessing.

Papajis 12. Mahasamadhi

Papaji's Mahasamadhi, the day his body died.)

Dear beloved Masterji,
dear family of love,

this day is dedicated to beloved Papaji!

Candles are burning in front of the photos of our graceful Masters,
Beautiful roses and rosepetals,
a slight fragrance of Nag Shampa fills the air.
I prepared a fruitplate and of course some sweets of handmade chocolate I offered to Papaji.
In between a happy Arati in my most beautiful indian clothes,
singing to Lucknow Project CD.
Later I will watch a Papaji DVD and enjoy some cups of selfmade chai.

Very happy and thankful that Papajis Satguru power now radiates through Madhukarjis presence!

Report from our july retreat "Summer of Love" in Sweden

Kära vänner,

För andra året i följd anordnades ”Summer of Love” med Madhukar på Hällungen kursgård. Vi var tjugofem deltagare som mötte upp för en veckas retreat på denna vackra och inbjudande plats vid sjön Hällungen. Det blev en härlig vecka med djup stillhet, frågor och klargörande dialoger i en anda av både humor och allvar.
Vi tog härliga promenader i den omgivande naturen. Den vegetariska maten var både god och hälsosam. Det trevliga bemötandet av de som arbetar på kursgården gjorde att vi snart kände oss som hemma. Satsang betyder möte i sanning och vi blev alla djupt berörda av den innerlighet som uppstår i mötet med Madhukar. Han återkommer ständigt till att vad vi innerst inne är, är obegränsad frihet och lycka. Detta är inte bara en vacker filosofisk idé utan ett verkligt faktum. Den hängivne sökaren kan nå insikt genom att ställa sig frågan „vem är jag?” Vid slutet av retreaten lyste allas ögon av glädje och lycka.

For the second year “Summer of Love” took place at Hällungen kursgård on the Swedish westcoast with Madhukar. 25 participants met for a one week retreat on this beautiful and inviting place situated at the lake Hällungen. It was a wonderful week with deep peace, questions and clarifying dialogues, which were both humorous and serious at the same time. We had lovely walks in the surrounding nature within its silent forests. The vegetarian food was very tasty and healthy. The people who worked at the retreat place welcomed us in a nice and warm way which made us feel at home. Satsang means meeting in truth and we all were deeply moved by the sincerity that arose by Madhukars presence. He always points to what we are: unbounded freedom and happiness. This is not just a nice philosophical idea, but a real fact. The devoted seeker can realize this truth by asking “Who am I?”.
At the end of the retreat everybodys eyes were shining out of joyful happiness.

A story of Kabir

Kabir was a weaver, and when he was waving his shuttle back and forth the loom he was singing “Ram, Ram, Ram”.

He attained liberation that way, simply while he was weaving. One day when he was weaving again, many people sat around him. Somebody asked him: “Oh Kabir, how to attain enlightenment?”. Kabir just kept on weaving. After a couple of minutes his shuttle fell on the floor. He was calling his disciple Kamal and said: “Kamal, bring a big lantern. My shuttle fell on the ground.”

Everybody in the room was puzzled over this. It was broad daylight and the sun was shining brightly. What does Kabir need a lantern for? Kamal brought the lantern and he found the shuttle which was laying directly at Kabirs foot. Kabir started weaving again. After some time the person who asked the question before said: “Kabir, you did not tell us yet how to attain entlightenment.” Kabir still did not answer.

Instead he again called Kamal and said: “There are so many people here. We have to feed them” . (In India there is a sweet dish called kava; milk is cooked for a long time and then is mixed with sugar). Kabir said: “Go now and prepare kava. Put lots of salt in it and let everybody have some”. Kamal did as he was told. He put lots of salt in the kava, was stirring it thoroughly and gave it out. Everybody was eating from it although ist was tasting salty. Kabir just kept on weaving and repeated constantly “Ram”. After a while the same man was asking: “Kabir, you still did not answer my question.”

“How do you get the idea that I did not answer your question?” Kabir asked. “Did you see Kamal? Do you believe he does not know that in broad daylight there is no lantern needed for searching a shuttle? Do you believe Kamal is not intelligent enough giving me the shuttle without looking for it with the lantern? Do you believe he does not know that kava is made with sugar and not with salt? When I said to give salt in the kava he could have thought: ‘Kabir is so old, he does not know what he is doing. I can give sugar into the kava and give this to the people.’ But instead he just did what I told him. That is the way to attain enlightenment. When somebody is serving his Guru in this way enlightenment comes to him.”

In the Gita, Krishna speaks to Arjuna of the importance of finding a guru: Acquire the transcendental knowledge from a Self-realized master by humble reverence, by sincere inquiry, and by service. The wise ones who have realized the Truth will impart the Knowledge to you.

Who is Shankara?

Shankracharya was one of India's foremost philosophers, his exact birth date is uncertain but was thought to have lived during the 8th Century AD.

Shankara interpreted Vedanta philosophy in a strictly Advaita (non dual, monistic) spirit. In essence this philosophy involves attaining the Supreme Transcendental Consciousness (Brahman) by detaching oneself from the material plane (also know as Maya or illusion.)

Despite teaching about the essential unreality of the world Shankara lived a life of great energy and action. In his short life span of 32 years he travelled to every corner of India spreading his advaita philosophy. Shankaracharya left a profound legacy on the spirituality of India. By the end of his life the Vedas were looked upon in a new light helping to unify the spiritual beliefs of India. He also reorganised the ancient monastic Swami order, which still continues to this day.

Shankaracharya engaged in many epic discussions with renowned scholars about the Veda's. Shankaracharya would invariably win these debates. It is said that many of his adversaries later became his followers because they were so impressed with his wisdom. Shankaracharya also had many disciples and he selected the best of these to be bestowed with the title "Acharya" These disciples were sent to different parts of India to propagate the teachings of Advaita and Shankaracharya.

After only a life of 32 years Shankaracharya embarked on his last journey to the Himalaya's. His last resting place was Kedarnath where Shankaracharya is said to have merged into Mahasamadhi. Many consider Shankaracharya to be a reincarnation of Lord Shiva

Guru Purnima, The Day of the Guru & Vyasa

Guru Purnima, the full moon day of the month of Ashad (July/August) is especially in India also called Vyasa Purnima.

On this day, which is dedicated to the big sage Vyasa, Sannyasins (people who have abandoned the world) come together to study and explain the threefold blessed Brahma Sutras (aphorisms about the creator God Brahma) Vyasa has written, and to get into Vedantic philosophical questions (Vedanta = one of the six main philosophical systems of India, literally: end of knowledge).

With the four Vedas (oldest texts of Indian literature), the eighteen Puranas (Indian tales of the Gods), with the Mahabharata (Indian heroic epic describing the fight of the descendants of Bharata) and with the Srimad Bhagavata (the tale of Krsna), Vyasa did an unforgettable service for mankind for all time.

In honor of this divine personality a puja (rite of veneration) is performed that day, and the disciples worship their teachers.

That day all believers worship Saints and the ones who have surrendered to God, and they offer them presents.

Guru Purnima 2009 on the 7th of July

Guru Purnima is the day (and the night) on which the moon reaches its greatest fullness during the whole year (mostly in July). It is said that is the day on which the sunbeams touched the earth for the first time, the day of the light.

Guru means "He who banishes darkness" and Purnima "full moon night". GuruPurinma is the festival in praise of the Guru, who takes away the darkness and bestows the light. Around the world on this day the Guru is honoured by his devotees, because it is the Guru who removes the illusion of bondage and shows the reality of freedom.

On this day of pure thankfulness, love and devotion we remember clearly the grace of the Guru to whose lotus feet we may sit. To recognize the grace of the master, his purity and his love is beyond words - pure grace.

Spring greetings from the Master

„Can’t you see Eternity?“ the singer was asking (in the song Eternity on the CD Freedom here and now). Because when you see Eternity and when you realize that you are Eternity, then serenity is here.

And when serenity is here, then formless love is here, joy. Because in Eternity everything appears and disappears – as the snow that comes and goes. Sticking to temporary forms, to the snowmen, which are created, leads to suffering. As a child begins to cry when the carrot drops from the snowman’s face and the coal eye plops out because the eye socket is melting. This body is also melting away. It is a fountain of joy – for some a fountain of suffering – but it is melting away. To know this, that you are not this body and not the changing states – is freedom. And sticking to states is imprisonment. Who you are is beyond freedom and imprisonment.

Visitor: How do I come out of captivity? (cries)

M: How is your name please?

V: Renate

M: And what does it mean: Renate?

V: The reborn.

M: Your ideas of captivity are memories of former captivities. Now your name says that you are reborn. Reborn in freedom. Now you fancy again that you are imprisoned. What is the result of that? Tears of happiness? No. Or do I give such a miserable impression that you are crying because of me? So, why are you crying?

V: When I am here with you, in front of you, then each time I feel fine the way I am. Totally accepted with all my positive and negative aspects. I never experienced this anywhere else, and that is why tears come up. I guess.

M: Fine, so you are touched, yes?

V: Yes.

M: And you are - as you say - accepted here. Why then are you leaving it again? You have been accepted already, you are accepted. Why are you leaving it again? What is more attractive than that? What is even better? What was even better?

V: Than being accepted?

M: Yes. What was even better than our last Oneness? You said that you are accepted when you are sitting in the front. What was even better? Tell me.

V: Nothing, nothing. Nothing at all. Noting at all.

M: So stay here. Just simply stay here. Being at home in Oneness. Now you have made the experience that all sorts of things suggest themselves to you, promising you experiences, often in form of mental ideas, emotions, promising you all kind of things, but cannot keep them. You have made these experiences before. Now you just simply stay here.

V: Thank you.

M: This being-here must be so strong, that all of this ideas, judgements, self-judgements, which have been put on you, burn up instantly. This incarnation is so short, only a moment, only a Now, did you not yet notice that? Only a Now. So why wasting this Now,this incarnation, with judgements about yourself? About others? About the world?

M: It is big joy when you say: I am here. Most people are happy when something positive is happening in their life. Occurrences. There is nothing to say against this. But all occurrences do not grant real joy. Therefore the master indicates to you that which never happens, that which is behind everything that happens. When you realize this you can say: I am free, I am not imprisoned. I am the occurrence-less, and I am not frightened. Nothing must happen. Everything already is.

Some questions asked to Madhukar in January 2002 in Poona. Although the questions have been asked some years ago, the answers are of eternal value...

Questioner: How does this realizing of the true Self manifest on the personal level in daily life?

Madhukar: By understanding who you are beyond any manifestation. In your daily life now, you are identifying with manifestation, with events, experiences, thoughts, and feelings. When you realize who you are, you know that you are That, in which everything takes place. You are untouched by any event, any experience, by any thought or feeling. Everything merely takes place and you react accordingly.

Q: Thoughts will still come, but the effect will be different?

Madhukar: Thoughts only affect others. Before, two people got pissed off. Now only one, the other! If you would really be interested in freedom, you would not engage yourself in these kinds of thoughts. You will never find an answer like this. You have to return home, home to Source, stillness in which mind activities take place or not. You have to find out who is, not merely engage in how you imagine it to look like.

Q: Are there any good things that you give up when you become enlightened?

Madhukar: Things that harm you, you might give up. Otherwise, there is no need to give up anything or to change anything. Your professional career or your sexual activities have nothing to do with who you are. This belongs to the person. Some personality traits may fade away because there is no longer any stress, and most activities are caused by stress and fear. But generally speaking, you do not need to change anything. People have tried to change, to suppress, and to transform for thousands of years without result. You must learn from this. Do not repeat the same mistakes. One instant is enough to realize who you are. And who cares what happens afterwards? By engaging in transformation processes, by trying to achieve a state that has certain qualities, you can only reach a very mediocre state. And any kind of state is a limitation; any kind of state is not Truth.

Mahashivratri on February 23rd, Monday

Maha Shivaratri is celebrated throughout the country; it is particularly popular in Uttar Pradesh. Maha Shivratri falls on the I3th (or I4th) day of the dark half of 'Phalgun' (February-March). The name means "the night of Shiva". The ceremonies take place chiefly at night. This is a festival observed in honour of Lord Shiva and it is believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati.

On this festival people worship 'Shiva - the Destroyer'. This night marks the night when Lord Shiva danced the 'Tandav'. In Andhra Pradesh, pilgrims throng the Sri Kalahasteshwara Temple at Kalahasti and the Bharamarambha Malikarjunaswamy Temple at Srisailam.

About The Lord

Shiva - the word meaning auspicious - is one of the Hindu Trinity, comprising of Lord Brahma, the creator, Lord Vishnu, the preserver and Lord Shiva or Mahesh, the Destroyer and Re-Producer of life. Shiva is known by many names like "Shankar", "Mahesh", "Bholenath", "Neelakanth", "Shambhu Kailasheshwar", "Umanath", "Nataraj" and others.

For few people, Shiva is "Paramatman", "Brahman", the Absolute, but many more prefer to see Shiva as a personal God given to compassion for his worshippers, and the dispenser of both spiritual and material blessings. Related to the Absolute concept is Shiva as "Yoganath" meaning the Lord of Yoga, wherein he becomes teacher, path and goal. As such he is the "Adi Guru" or the Highest Guru of 'Sannyasins' who have renounced the world to attain the Absolute.

He is the most sought-after deity amongst the Hindus and they pray to him as the god of immense large-heartedness who they believe grants all their wishes. Around him are weaved many interesting stories that reveal His magnanimous heart. Not only this, but these stories and legends also enrich the Indian culture and art.

Time is invisible and formless. Therefore Mahakal Shiva, as per the Vedas, manifested himself as "LINGUM" to make mankind aware of the presence of Eternal Time. That day when Shiva manifested himself in the form of "Lingum" was the fourth day of the dark night in the month of 'Magha' i.e. February-March. Maha Shivratri continues to be celebrated forever and ever.

The Story Of King Chitrabhanu

In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma, whilst resting on the bed of arrows and discoursing on Dharma, refers to the observance of Maha Shivaratri by King Chitrabhanu. The story goes as follows - Once upon a time King Chitrabhanu of the Ikshvaku dynasty, who ruled over the whole of Jambudvipa, was observing a fast with his wife, it being the day of Maha Shivaratri. The sage Ashtavakra came on a visit to the court of the king.

The sag asked the king the purpose of his observing the past. King Chitrabhanu explained that he had the gift of remembering the incidents of his previous birth.

The king said to the sage that in his previous he was a hunter in Varanasi and his name was Suswara. His only livelihood was to kill and sell birds and animals. One day while roaming through forests in search of animals he was overtaken by the darkness of night. Unable to return home, he climbed a tree for shelter. It happened to be a Bael tree. He had shot a deer that day but had no time to take it home. So he bundled it up and tied it to a branch on the tree. As hunger and thirst tormented him, he was kept awake throughout the night. He shed profuse tears when he thought of his poor wife and children who were starving and anxiously waiting for his return. To pass away the time that night he engaged himself in plucking the Bael leaves and dropping them down onto the ground.
The nest day he returned home and sold the deer and then bought some food for himself and his family. The moment he was about to break his fast a stranger came to him, begging for food. He served the food first to stranger and then had his own.
At the time of his death, he saw two messengers of Lord Shiva. They were sent down to conduct his soul to the abode of Lord Shiva. He learnt then for the first time of the great merit he had earned by the unconscious worship of Lord Shiva during the night of Shivaratri. The messengers told him that there was a Lingam at the bottom of the tree. The leaves I dropped fell on the Lingam. His tears, which had shed out of pure sorrow for his family, fell onto the Lingam and washed it and he had fasted all day and all night. Thus, he unconsciously worshiped the Lord.
As the conclusion of the tale the King said that he lived in the abode of the Lord and enjoyed divine bliss for long ages and now he has reborn as Chitrabhanu.

The Festivity

People observe a strict fast on this day. Some devotees do not even take a drop of water and they keep vigil all night. The Shiva Lingam is worshipped throughout the night by washing it every three hours with milk, curd, honey, rose water, etc., whilst the chanting of the Mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" continues. Offerings of Bael leaves are made to the Lingam as Bael leaves are considered very sacred and it is said that Goddess Lakshmi resides in them.

Hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, such as the "Shiva Mahimna Stotra" of Pushpadanta or Ravana's "Shiva Tandava Stotra" are sung with great fervour and devotion. People repeat the 'Panchakshara' Mantra, "Om Namah Shivaya". He, who utters the names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with perfect devotion and concentration, is freed from all sins. He reaches the abode of Shiva and lives there happily. He is liberated from the wheel of births and deaths. Many pilgrims dock to the places where there are Shiva temples.

Mystery Of Oneness retreat is leaving deep silent marks in all of us and it was like leaving a big family at the lunch table when the retreat was over. I asked the owners of the retreat place if they were happy with us and answer was: "All of you were just completely blissed out so how can we be happier?"

The Grace of Masterji and the rings of Silence that Satsang was spreading was felt by many who didn't even know what we were/are (not) doing. One woman who was just living next to us said: "I know now that God loves me, else he wouldn't have brought me here to this place".

So how to describe this retreat in other words than theirs....

My Master said: accept everything that comes to you, and accept when it goes. Accept when stories are finished.

I like to add: accept everything that comes to you that is good for you, that suits you. Somebody comes and offers confusion, you do not accept.

Somebody comes and offers jeaulousy you do not accept, you do not involve. Somebody comes and offers frustration, you do not accept, you do not involve. Somebody offers stupidity, stupidness, you do not accept, you do not involve.

Likewise everything that goes - let it go. All will go in the end: body will go, all relation will go, all material, materiality, will go. All crazyness will go. So let it go.

Live in the world knowing I, who I is. Live in the maya, in the illusion of the world confidently, happily, knowing the I, knowing the source, always be the source.

Even Jesus Christ said the same: I am in the world but I am not from the world.
Peace is very precious. Peace is the reality, the truth. Underlying everything. For it to manifest in your live it manifests in it in a very fine subtile attunement. This you have to appreciate. Be thankful for it. Do not exchange it for stupidity, for nonsense.

Everyone wants to be happy and fulfil one’s desire, one’s programm, one’s imagination. But actually everybody wants to be in peace. Knowing that everything else is unnatural.

So once you imagine not to be in peace, fast return to the source. Fast return here to peace itself.

So you need your skills, you need some skills to live happy, to appreciate nothingness, to be grateful to manifestation, to be thankful to the heart, to adore the diamant that Self is.

Otherwise you live the ignorance of the blind man.
Blindness is: I am this, I am that, I am my past.

"Silence is the highest Upadesha, the highest teaching. Everything appears in this silence and disappears in it. Once you realize that you are this silence, you are free. Because silence is free. Silence is free and happy.

Only silence is. I have no interest to speak about Truth. Because everything what one talks about, what one speaks about, is not Truth.

I may have a conversation on the beach when I meet some comrade, some ordinary men. Somebody, who does not use me. For you who like to use me I do not like to speak.

Because what is of value, the truth, cannot be spoken about. No one has ever spoken about it. So simply realize that precious moment which always is. And your life-duty is full-filled!

Somebody who is mad, somebody who is crazy is very difficultly convinced; that his or her experience or story is not true. You, who are not mad, do you know your story is not true? Do you know that in reality there is no story at all? If you look you find out there is no story at all!

A flower, a rose, does not need to be convinced about anything. It is silent, attractive. Self-conscious. The rose is free and you are free.
That is all!"

Karthigai Deepam Festival - Arunachala - 11th December

Karthigai Deepam Festival

The Karthigai Deepam festival is celebrated in the Tamil Month of Karthigai (November - December). It begins on Uttradam day with flag hoisting and goes on the nine days. In the early hours of the tenth day Bharani Deepam in five agantams will be lit in Arunachaleswarar's Sannithi. In the evening, the Pancha Murthis will be brought to the Katchi Mandapam. At dusk (Pradosha) the Karthigai day synchronizing with the full moon day, the deity, Ardhanareeswarar is taken out to this place with the five deepams, which are put in a big receptacle near the flug-stuff. At the same time the beacon light on the hill is lit. The huge concourse of devotees from all parts of our country in a million voice raise a cry simultaneously "Harohara to Annamalai" which will rend the air. It is a sight for the Gods to see!

ROWS OF agal vilakkus in front of every house... this is the image that at once comes to mind when we think of Karthigai Deepam - the festival of lights that is celebrated throughout Tamil Nadu during the month of Karthigai (November-December). Not many of us are aware that it is one of the oldest festivals celebrated in the State, perhaps even before people began celebrating Deepavali and Navarathri. Also, unlike many other Hindu festivals, Karthigai is basically a Tamil festival and is virtually unknown in most other parts of the country.

One of the earliest references to the festival is found in the Ahananuru, a book of poems, which dates back to the Sangam Age (200 B.C. to 300 A.D.). The Ahananuru clearly states that Karthigai is celebrated on the full moon day (pournami) of the Tamil month of Karthigai. It was one of the most important festivals (peruvizha) of the ancient Tamils. Avaiyyar, the renowned poetess of those times, refers to the festival in her songs.

Karthigai is essentially a festival of lamps. The lighted lamp is considered an auspicious symbol. It is believed to ward off evil forces and usher in prosperity and joy. While the lighted lamp is important for all Hindu rituals and festivals, it is indispensable for Karthigai.

Karthigai Deepam Festival Legend

There is an interesting story explaining the link between Karthigai and lamps. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma began to quarrel as to who was the more powerful of the two. While they were fighting, Lord Shiva appeared before them in the form of a huge pillar of fire. Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma gave up quarrelling and decided to find the top and the bottom of the pillar.

Accordingly, Brahma assumed the form of a swan and moved upwards. Vishnu transformed himself into a boar and started digging deep into the earth. But even after searching for several years, neither of the two was able to find the ends the pillar. Finally, they realised that the pillar was none other than Lord Shiva.

Soon afterwards, Lord Shiva appeared as a hill (Arunachala Hill) at Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu. Indeed, the very names `Tiruvannamalai' and `Arunachala' translate as `holy fire hill.' The Shivalinga in the temple here is the agni linga. The tiny lamps lit during the Karthigai festival (Karthigai Deepam) are believed to be the miniature replicas of the fire linga. Every year thousands of devotees from Chennai and elsewhere flock to Tiruvannamalai to see the spectacular Karthigai Deepam there.

Geographic accessibility

This town Thiruvannamalai is situated in 187 kilometers away from Chennai, formerly known as Madras- Capital of Tamil Nadu and there is a railway station on the villupuram - Katpadi rail route. This town stands on an elevation of 266ft ( 79.80 M ) above sea level.

Sri H.W.L. Poonja

Sri H.W.L. Poonja, alias Poonjaji or Papaji, was born in Punjab (now part of Pakistan) in 1910 and died in Lucknow (Northern India) in 1997. He awakened in the presence of his master Ramana Maharshi who instructed him to perform all worldly tasks and take care of his big family. So for many years he worked as an engineer with a mining company in Kerala. After retirement Poonjaji went travelling and later he settled down in Lucknow where between 1990 and 1997 he attracted a steady stream of Western seekers. Many people who came to see him were deeply touched by the strength and lovingness of his (non-) teaching about freedom as the ultimate truth.

These days many awakened men and women refer to him as their master and he is considered an important link to Ramana Maharshi. Poonjaji: "There is no search, because you can search only for something you have lost. Simply be still. Leave all thoughts aside. Then you will know who you really are."
